Breakdown

Indy Bunch is a route concept out of the Shotgun Bunch TE formation designed to attack man and zone coverage with natural rub action from the tight bunch alignment. The bunch receivers work a combination of an in-breaking route, a corner or seam route, and an underneath flat or shallow cross, creating traffic that forces defenders to fight through picks. The primary read progression starts with the inside breaking route off the natural rub, moves to the corner or vertical route if the defense bites underneath, and finishes with the flat or checkdown option as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Read the cornerback depth on the bunch side, if he is playing tight man expect the rub to spring someone open quickly Identify if there is a designated bunch defender or banjo call, a well coached defense will bracket the bunch with a robber or lurk defender sitting in the throwing lane Watch linebacker depth at the snap, shallow linebackers signal underneath zone drops that can undercut the shallow cross or flat route Cover 3 and Cover 1 with a spy or lurk near the bunch can shut this down by taking away the natural rub advantage and forcing you to the low percentage outlet If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 look for the seam or corner route to work behind the underneath zone drops before the safety can rotate over

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment pre-snap to identify single high versus two high shells before deciding whether to attack the seam or work the underneath options

Against man coverage look immediately for the natural rub off the bunch release since defenders trailing in man will often get picked or lose their footing

Against zone shells work your eyes to the flat defender and the hole in the zone created by the bunch clearing out one level of the defense

Use this on second and medium to second and long when defenses are more likely to sit in zone and give up the underneath completions

Hot route the flat option into a deeper corner or wheel route if you diagnose a blitz look pre-snap to hit an explosive play behind the rush
