PA Y Sail is a play-action pass out of Singleback Wing Tight with 13 personnel that uses a sail concept stacked over a deep clearing route. The play fakes the run to hold the linebackers, then the outside receiver clears vertically up the sideline while the Y (tight end) runs the sail route underneath into the flat area, with the backside receiver working a deep crossing route and the wing running a short drag underneath. The primary read progression starts with the deep vertical clear route to see if it pulls the safety, then works down to the Y sail route in the flat, and finally checks down to the crossing drag if both are covered, making this an effective Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater against zone shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify two-high safety shells since this concept is built to exploit Cover 2 by putting the flat defender in conflict between the sail route and the vertical clear route. Watch the flat defender or overhang linebacker after the snap: if he sinks too deep chasing the vertical route, the sail route sits wide open underneath. Against Cover 3, key the deep third defender to the play side, the vertical clearing route occupies him while the sail route settles in the void behind the underneath zone defender. Man coverage with a linebacker spy or blitz can disrupt this play quickly since the play-action fake takes time to develop, so watch for pressure off the edge before the sail route breaks open. If you see press man across from the vertical route with a single-high safety, expect the corner to stay on top and the QB will likely progress faster to the sail or drag underneath.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs when you have already established the run game out of Wing Tight to sell the play-action fake and freeze linebackers.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: two deep safeties tips Cover 2, so target the sail route sitting down in the flat under the corner.
If the corner sinks with the vertical clear route, hit the sail route on time before the flat defender can widen and close the throwing window.
Combine this with HB Inside Zone or HB Power O earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up PA Y Sail to attack the same gap vision defenders.
Pair this play in your call sheet with PA Saints Sail or PA Boot Flood to give defenders similar action pre-snap while stressing different levels of the zone.
Use the crossing route as a hot route answer against man coverage since the sail concept alone is more zone dependent than man dependant.
