Play diagram for Mtn Fk Double Pass from Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk in Madden 27

Breakdown

Mtn Fk Double Pass is a trick play out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk that disguises itself as an outside run before flipping into a backwards double pass. At the snap the ball carrier attacks the flat and reverses field on the blue path while the outside receiver runs a fake jet/end around motion that curls upfield into a pitch route, and the backside X releases vertically up the boundary while the slot runs a flat route underneath. The primary read progression starts with the pitch man selling the run fake, then hitting the receiver who curled back for the toss, and that receiver becomes the actual thrower looking downfield first to the deep vertical route and checking down to the flat route if the defense collapses on the run action.

Defensive Reads

Watch for defenders flowing hard downhill toward the initial pitch action, aggressive run fits from linebackers are the biggest tell that the trick play will hit. Man coverage on the outside receiver who becomes the thrower is a red flag, if he is not open on his curl release the entire play breaks down before the second pass is even thrown. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined safeties who stay deep tend to shut this down since they can peel off and cover the vertical route on the backside. Look for a nickel or slot corner shooting into the flat immediately at the snap, that indicates a blitz or aggressive run key that leaves the deep route or the pitch lane exposed. If the user controls a linebacker and sits at the second level reading the backfield instead of flowing, that lurk defender can jump the pitch or the underneath flat route and blow up the entire concept.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense has bitten hard on your outside run game in previous series.

Sell the fake with your right stick or run commit animation before flipping the pitch, defenders that key run flow will trigger and open up the double pass.

Use this after running Mtn Buck Sweep or HB Off Tackle a few times so linebackers and safeties start flowing hard to the run side, that sets up this exact false key.

Motion the slot receiver pre-snap to check if the defense shifts a linebacker or corner with him, if nobody adjusts it is likely zone coverage and the deep vertical route will have room.

If you see a safety cheating down into the box pre-snap, this is a green light play since the double pass punishes single-high looks that sell out against the run.
