RPO Peek Slant is a run pass option out of Shotgun Spread Y-Slot Wk that pairs an inside handoff read with a two man slant package to the boundary. The diagram shows the two closest receivers running stacked slants, with the inner slant breaking first and the outer slant sitting right behind it as a natural pick concept, while the backfield run action is shown by the yellow horizontal arrow to the running back. The quarterback's primary read is the alley or flat defender: if that defender crashes down on the run, pull the ball and throw the inner slant immediately, working from the near slant to the trailing slant if the first window closes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the alley defender and the slot corner or nickel over the stacked receivers before the snap, if they are sitting inside at depth the slant window is tight. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with a hard flat defender will bait the run read since the underneath throwing lane gets clogged by that defender sitting on the slant. Man coverage with an outside linebacker or nickel in press is vulnerable because the stacked slant release picks the underneath defender and creates natural separation for the trailing route. User controlled defenders sitting in a low hole or spying the mesh point can jump the run read, so watch for a defender staying home instead of respecting the play action. A fast flowing linebacker or blitzing nickel that crashes hard on the mesh point opens the slant throw instantly, so key linebacker depth and lean run if they stay put and throw if they crash.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and give the ball on the RPO read if the defense is in a light front with only six or seven men near the line.

Key the flat or curl to flat defender through your presnap read, if he sits at depth throw the slant now instead of waiting on the run fake.

Use the hot route menu to adjust the outside slant into a fade or speed out against man press corners who jump the underneath route.

This concept is best on early downs and short yardage since the run action is live and the slant window closes fast against disciplined zone drops.
