Y Lead Read Option is a run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk that puts the QB in a zone read look with the HB stacked behind him. The diagram shows two outside receivers running straight vertical releases to hold the corners deep while the TE aligns tight to the line for a lead block through the hole, giving the offensive line a zone blocking scheme up front. The primary read is the QB reading the play side end or first unblocked defender off the edge: give the ball to the HB on the inside zone track if that defender crashes down, or keep it himself and attack the edge if he stays wide.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap: if he lines up wide and crashes hard on the snap, the QB should pull the ball and keep it around the edge. A safety cheating into the box pre-snap signals run support and means the offense should key the read on the linebacker flow instead of the end. Man coverage on both outside receivers with no underneath help suggests the defense is selling out to stop the run, so watch for a blitzing linebacker off the edge as the unassigned read defender. Zone coverage with a hard-flowing linebacker to the play side usually means the cutback lane on the inside zone track will be there for the HB. If the defense shows a spy or keeps a linebacker home at the mesh point, that is the biggest sign the QB keep option is taken away and the dive read becomes automatic.
Check the defensive end alignment before the snap because his depth and width tell you whether the zone read will hit inside or bounce outside. Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts instead of stacking the box. If the defense shows a heavy box with the safety creeping down, hot route one of the outside verticals into a quick out to hold a flat defender and open the edge for the keep. Pair this play with Fk Cheat HB Stretch and Outside Zone in the same series so the defense has to respect both the inside read and the perimeter stretch, making your zone read keep more explosive. Against aggressive user defenders flying downhill on the RB, trust the keep read since Madden AI and most human DEs overcommit to the dive fake.
