This is a man and zone beater hybrid since the run fake collapses linebackers and puts flat defenders in conflict, and the primary read progression starts with the underneath flat or check down route before working to the deeper breaking route on the backside.

Defensive Reads

Check pre-snap safety depth, since a single high safety shell signals man coverage underneath and increases the chance linebackers bite on the run fake. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they crash hard toward the line of scrimmage on the stretch fake, the rollout throwing lanes open up in the intermediate flat and hash areas. Identify user controlled defenders spying the quarterback rollout lane, since a disciplined user linebacker or safety can jump the throw and turn it into a pick six. This play struggles against Cover 3 sink or Cover 4 shells where the flat defender stays home and does not respect the run fake, clogging the rollout window. Blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge the quarterback is rolling toward will collapse the pocket quickly, so recognize overload pressure looks pre-snap and be ready to check down immediately.

Hot route the underneath receiver to a quick out or drag if the cornerback is playing off coverage, giving the quarterback an easy completion on the rollout instead of forcing a deep shot.

Against zone shells, target the flat defender in conflict immediately off the play fake since he has to choose between run support and covering the boundary.
