Tackle Trap is a gap scheme power run out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive tackle pulling across the formation to trap the first defender inside the point of attack while the interior linemen block down, creating a natural crease for the ball carrier to press. This is a run play designed to punish overaggressive interior penetration, so the primary read is the trapped defender's alignment: if he crashes hard inside, the hole opens off his outside shoulder, and the HB should press the trap block before cutting off the pulling tackle's block.
Watch the defensive tackle alignment before the snap. A 3-technique or shaded interior lineman who consistently shoots gaps is the exact trigger this trap scheme is designed to punish. Key the linebacker depth. If the mike or backside linebacker is sitting tight to the line in run support, he can beat the pulling tackle to the hole and blow up the trap before it develops. Identify scrape exchange or defensive line stunts. A disciplined tackle who reads the trap and squeezes down instead of crashing will neutralize this run before the puller arrives. Look for a spy or lurk defender sitting in the box pre-snap. If the defense is running a run blitz or gap exchange with a linebacker crashing the same hole as the trap, user control that defender to blow the play up at the mesh point. Check safety depth in the run fit. A single high safety who reads run fast and fills downhill can close the cutback lane if the HB bounces outside the trap block.
Call this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when you expect a base front or a slanting defensive line that likes to shoot gaps.
Check the defensive tackle alignment before the snap. If he is shaded heavy inside the guard, this play is primed because his aggressive first step is exactly what the trap block exploits.
Use the left or right trigger to manually control the pulling tackle if you want precise timing on the trap block against a stunt or twist.
Pair Tackle Trap with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so defenders start keying zone footwork, which makes the trap block even more effective when the interior defender fires upfield.
Sequence this behind PA Fk Cheat Post Cross or PA Cheat Wheel Post earlier in the game so the defense respects play action, softening their run fits against this gap scheme call.
