Breakdown

Drive out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk sends the backside X on a deep vertical clearout to pull coverage away while the inside receiver runs a deep dig sitting between the numbers. The tight end runs the classic drive route, working across the field underneath the dig to settle in the shallow zone, and the running back releases out of the backfield on a whip route toward the sideline as a checkdown or man beater versus late linebacker drops. The single receiver to the right runs an out breaking route that occupies the flat defender. This is a Cover 4 beater by design: the primary read starts with the deep dig against the middle of the field, working down to the drive route underneath if the safeties squeeze the dig window, then checking to the HB whip or the out route on the boundary.

Defensive Reads

Watch the two safeties pre-snap: if they sit at depth in a Cover 4 shell, the dig route has a natural throwing lane once the clearout occupies the deep quarter defenders. Key the flat defender on the boundary route side, since a hard flat drop signals zone coverage and opens the HB whip route underneath. User the middle linebacker or nickel defender who has drop responsibility over the drive route, since a lurking defender sitting on that shallow crossing route can bait an interception if the quarterback stares it down. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 with a single high safety, expect the dig to get squeezed by the deep middle defender, so be ready to check down to the drive or HB whip immediately. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the clearout receiver signals a blitz or press look, which favors a quick throw to the drive route or HB whip before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify two-high versus single-high safety alignment since this concept is built specifically to punish Cover 4 shells where safeties widen for the vertical clearout.

If you see the corner shaded outside on the clearout receiver, expect the dig window to open up quicker because the safety has to respect the vertical first.

Hot route the running back into a pass protection stay if you are facing a heavy blitz look, since the whip route disappears against pressure and you need a checkdown valve elsewhere.

Pair this play with PA Corner or Corner Strike from the same set to keep defenders honest on the vertical shell, then come back to Drive once the safeties start jumping the deep routes.

Best called on second and medium to third and long where you have time to work through the full progression from the dig down to the drive and HB whip.
