Fk Cheat Outside Zone is a zone run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk that uses pre-snap motion to check the defensive front before the snap. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally as a zone blocking unit while the HB takes a stretch path to the play side, reading blockers to find a crease. This is a run play designed to cut back against overpursuit, with the primary read being the frontside cutback lanes off the zone flow before working backside if the edge is clogged.
Key the linebacker depth at the snap, since fast-flowing linebackers who overrun the zone stretch open up the cutback lane for the HB. Watch for defensive ends and edge defenders staying home on outside zone, which forces the runner to bend it back inside against the grain. Identify run blitzes and gap-shooting techniques from interior defenders, as this play is vulnerable to a well-timed A-gap shoot that beats the zone blockers before they can climb. If the defense shows an overloaded front with extra defenders stacked to the play side, cut the run back immediately rather than trying to force it outside. Man coverage on the backside with a spy or extra hitter in the box is the biggest threat to this run, since it cuts down the room the HB needs to find the cutback lane.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Run this against light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the outside zone concept relies on numbers advantage on the perimeter.
Bounce it outside against gap-heavy fronts that crash hard inside, and stick it up through the interior cutback lane if the edge defenders squeeze down too fast.
Pair this with PA Fk Cheat Quick Out or PA Behind Fk Cheat Post Cross out of the same set to keep linebackers honest once you have established the zone run tendency.
Best called on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play-action shots later in the series.
