The diagram shows a five man offensive line blocking straight ahead with zone steps, while the WRs and TE are not shown running routes, confirming this is a pure zone run play designed to get the RB downhill. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is backside cutback first, then the frontside bend, and finally the bounce outside if the playside gets sealed, reading the play side double team and the first level defenders flowing to the ball.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the box count, if the defense has six or more in the box on standard personnel this run has a lower ceiling and you should consider passing instead. Watch the safety alignment, single high shells with the safety sitting deep tend to leave more room for the cutback lane since there is no extra run support underneath. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard to the play side gap immediately, cut the ball back against the grain for a bigger gain. This play struggles against aggressive gap shooting blitzes and nano blitzes that send extra rushers untouched into the backfield before the line can seal running lanes. Look for user controlled defenders spying the mesh point, if the user jumps the play side gap early, bounce the run outside behind the tackle for an explosive gain.
Usage Tips
Check the linebacker depth before the snap, if both backers are stacked tight to the box this play has less room so consider audibling to Outside Zone or Duo instead.
Use the RB's placement to your advantage by pressing the play side hole first, this forces the defense to commit before you cut back against the grain.
Pair Inside Zone with Fk Cheat HB Stretch Behind and Fk Cheat Outside Zone in the same set to keep the defense guessing on zone run direction and force poor eye discipline from linebackers.
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains and set up play action shots off the same look, such as PA Corner or PA Fk Cheat Post Cross.
Against heavy blitz looks, hot route the TE to chip and stay in as an extra blocker to protect the cutback lane rather than sending him out on a route.
