Duo out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk is a downhill gap run scheme designed to double team the play side defensive tackle at the point of attack before climbing to the second level. The diagram shows the offensive line covered with double team blocks at the point of attack while the TE and fullback style blocker seal the edge, with the HB taking a one cut path behind the double team. This is a run play built to create vertical push, not a man or zone beater, and the primary read is the HB reading the double team block first before pressing the crease off the double team push.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked or heavy fronts, Duo struggles against gap exchange defenses that get extra bodies to the double team point of attack quickly. Key the play side linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is sitting shallow in the box he can shoot the gap before the double team locks on. Post-snap, track the backside linebacker for a user controlled scrape over the top, this is the most common way defenses blow up the cutback lane. Look for safeties cheating into the box pre-snap, an eighth man in the run fit against Duo usually means the cutback is dead and the ball carrier should stick to the double team side. Blitzes off the edge from a Wk personnel look can be schemed to shut this down fast, so respect A gap and B gap pressure that beats the double team before it forms.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short when the defense is showing base personnel with linebackers at normal depth.
Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box consider bailing to a pass or checking to a different concept.
Use motion or a hard count to see if linebackers declare a blitz or shift their gap alignment before the snap.
Pair Duo with Fk Cheat HB Stretch and Outside Zone in the same set so the defense cannot sit on one gap scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate between downhill and lateral run fits.
Set up explosive play action shots like PA Corner or PA Fk Cheat Post Cross later in a series once the defense starts flowing hard to stop the double team push.
