The concept floods the underneath zones with a mix of out breaking routes and an in breaking option, forcing conflict for the flat defenders and outside linebackers. Blocking stays in to protect against four man rushes while the primary read progression starts with the quick out to the boundary, works to the underneath in cut, and checks down to the backfield outlet if both are covered.

Defensive Reads

Read the corner depth at the snap, if he sinks into a deep zone drop the quick out window opens immediately for an easy completion. Watch for user controlled defenders sitting in the flat or lurking underneath, this play struggles against aggressive user zone drops that jump the out route timing. Check linebacker depth pre snap, shallow linebackers signal an underneath zone concept that can undercut your in breaking route, so be ready to progress to the check down. This concept gets shut down by press man coverage with outside leverage since the out route has nowhere to break, so avoid calling this against Cover 0 or Cover 1 press looks. Look for late blitz disguises off the edge, since protection is light for quick game, a delayed rusher can disrupt your first read before the ball is out.

Usage Tips

Use this on second and short or third and short when defenses expect a quick pass and sit in soft zone shells rather than committing to man press. Check the flat defenders pre snap, if a linebacker or cornerback is sitting hard on the boundary, hot route your outside receiver to a speed out or slant to counter the jump. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 look, the quick out to the flat is money since the corner has to respect the deep third and cannot close fast enough. Pair this with Clearout Sideline Outs or Shuffle HB Out in the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick outs and deeper sideline shots, this keeps user linebackers from jumping the initial out route on repeat calls. Motion the tight end pre snap to identify man versus zone, if the defender follows across the formation you know to attack with the underneath option route instead of the boundary out.
