Breakdown

Smash Dagger out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk combines two classic route concepts on either side of the formation. To the boundary, the outside receiver runs a corner route while the inside receiver sits underneath on a quick out, forming the smash concept that stretches the flat and corner defenders vertically. To the field side, the outside receiver runs a deep dig that sits down over the middle while the inside receiver clears vertically on a seam, creating the dagger read that clears out underneath zones. The primary read progression starts with the dagger side seam-to-dig combo against zone shells, then works to the smash corner route if the safety rotates away, with the check-down running back releasing underneath as a final outlet.

Defensive Reads

Key the safety alignment before the snap, a two-high shell tips off Cover 2 or Cover 4 while a single deep safety signals Cover 3 or man coverage. Post-snap, watch the flat defender on the smash side, if he sinks with the corner route the quick out underneath opens up immediately. On the dagger side, track the middle linebacker's depth, a shallow drop means he can undercut the dig route so the seam clearer needs to occupy him longer. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the intermediate middle zone, they can jump the dig route if the quarterback holds the ball too long. This play struggles against aggressive man blitzes since the dig and corner routes take time to develop, so check blitz packages with linebacker depth before committing to the deep read.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is playing two-high or single-high safety look since this dictates which side of the concept you attack first.

Against two-high shells, lean on the smash concept because the corner route will beat a Cover 2 cornerback sitting on the flat.

Against single-high or Cover 3 looks, work the dagger side first since the dig route settles into the void vacated by the seam runner clearing the middle linebacker.

Use hot routes to convert the check-down running back into a wider flat route if you anticipate a blitz, giving yourself an outlet against pressure.

Pair this play with Smash Drag or Smash Y Pivot from the same set to keep the defense guessing on which concept you are running while disguising your pre-snap alignment.
