Breakdown

Smash Dagger combines a two man smash concept to the closed side with a dagger concept to the open side. To the left, the outside receiver runs a corner route while the tight end runs a flat route underneath, creating a high low stretch on the flat defender and deep corner defender. To the right, one receiver clears out on a deep vertical route while the underneath receiver runs a dig route sitting behind it, and the running back releases into a flat route out of the backfield. This is a route combo built to attack both zone shells and man coverage, with the dagger side punishing Cover 3 and Cover 2 by clearing the deep zone for the dig, while the smash side gives you a built in answer against Cover 2 corners playing the flat. The primary read starts with the dagger dig route working against linebacker depth and safety rotation, then progresses to the smash corner route if the defense rolls a safety over the top or if the dig window closes.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow the dagger dig route has a clean throwing lane behind him Key the deep safety rotation, a single high safety rolling to the dagger side clears space for the smash corner route on the opposite side Look for the flat defender on the smash concept, if he widens with the tight end the corner route sits in the open window behind him Cover 2 shells with hard flat drops are vulnerable to the corner route beating the cornerback over the top before the safety can get over Watch for user lurk defenders sitting in the dagger window, an aggressive user linebacker or safety jumping the dig route means you should reset to the smash side flat and corner combo

Usage Tips

Identify the safety alignment before the snap, two high shells tell you to lean on the dagger dig since the corner clearing route will pull a safety out of the middle of the field

Against single high or Cover 3 looks, key the flat defender on the smash side, if he sinks with the corner route the flat is open underneath for an easy checkdown

Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense is more likely to sit in zone shells rather than crash the box

If the defense shows man coverage pre-snap, hot route the flat route on the smash concept into a quick out to create separation against a trailing defender

Pair this play with Z Dagger or Hammer Dagger in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on the smash tag, keeping linebackers honest on the dig read
