To the left, the outside receiver runs a corner route stretching the sideline while the slot receiver runs the shallow hitch/spot underneath, and the running back releases out of the backfield on an arrow route to the flat, forming the traditional flat-hitch-corner triangle read. To the field side, the TE runs a deep dig breaking back across the middle while the outside receiver runs a quick out to the flat, giving a natural high-low complement against zone drops. This is a Cover 3 beater built to attack the flat defender and hook zone with the spot/flat combo, with the primary read progression starting at the flat (RB arrow) to the spot (hitch), then working to the corner route if the cornerback squats.

Defensive Reads

Read the flat defender first since Cover 3 corners who squat on the arrow route open up the spot route sitting right behind them for an easy completion. Check linebacker depth before the snap since shallow linebackers in zone will struggle to carry the TE dig crossing behind them. Watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the hook zone since that lurker can jump the spot route if the quarterback stares it down too long. This concept struggles against Cover 4 or press man coverage on the outside since the corner route can get squeezed by an aggressive cornerback jumping the route. Look for blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge since the quick spot and arrow routes give the QB an immediate answer to beat pressure before it arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short to medium since the spot concept gives you a quick, high percentage completion underneath.

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing single high or two high safeties, since Cover 3 zone defenders tend to overcommit to the flat and open up the spot route sitting behind them.

If you see man coverage instead, hot route the corner route into a fade or use the TE dig as your primary man beater since it crosses the field away from leverage.

Sequence this play with Mesh Spot or Curls from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game spot concepts and floods, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their zone drops.

Against aggressive user blitzes, get the ball out fast to the RB arrow route or spot route to neutralize the pass rush before it gets home.
