Outside Zone out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk is a zone run play that sends the offensive line flowing laterally to stretch the defense horizontally before the HB picks his crease. The diagram shows the two outside WRs running vertical releases to occupy the corners while the TE stays in tight to help seal the edge, and the HB takes the handoff and works to bounce outside or cut back based on the flow of the defensive line. The primary read progression is the HB reading his blockers from the playside tackle out to the edge, looking to bounce, bang, or bend based on how the front reacts to zone flow.

Defensive Reads

Check the depth of the middle linebacker before the snap, if he is sitting at five yards or more he can fill cutback lanes quickly and shut down the backside. Watch for a 3-4 or 4-3 Under front with the defensive line slanting hard toward the play call, this can blow up zone blocking angles immediately. Identify whether the defense is running a scrape exchange with the edge defender crashing down while a linebacker replaces him outside, this is the classic outside zone counter. User the playside defensive end or outside linebacker to string the play out and force the HB to commit to a lane before he can read the block. Nickel and dime fronts with lighter boxes are more vulnerable, but a heavy front with two gap defensive tackles clogging interior lanes takes away the cutback entirely.

Usage Tips

Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, this play struggles against stacked eight man fronts.

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into flowing hard so you can set up a cutback lane.

Hot route the backside WR into a quick screen or bind him inside if you see man coverage crashing down to prevent an easy tackle for loss.

Pair this with Fk Cheat Outside Zone or Inside Zone from the same set to keep defenders guessing on zone direction and force LBs to hesitate on their run fits.

Best called on early downs or short yardage third downs where defenses are more likely to sit in base run fronts instead of nickel or dime packages.
