Pivot Dig out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk lines up with two receivers stacked to the left, a TE in-line to the right, and an HB releasing out of the backfield. The left outside receiver runs a deep corner/go route to clear space while the inside receiver executes the pivot, breaking outside then snapping back inside on a dig across the middle. The TE on the right runs a deep crosser back across the field underneath the go route, while the HB releases into a flat/wheel route out of the backfield as a checkdown and man beater against linebackers. This is a man beater concept built around the pivot route's break to shake off tight coverage, with the dig as the primary read once the quarterback sees the middle of the field open up.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify single-high versus two-high safety shells, single-high looks are more vulnerable since the deep corner route occupies the one deep defender and opens the dig underneath. Watch cornerback alignment on the pivot receiver, tight man press coverage gets beaten by the pivot's break, so bail or off coverage forces a tougher, more contested throw. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, if he sinks deep to cover the dig the quarterback should redirect to the TE's crosser or the HB's flat release underneath. This concept struggles against disciplined zone drops that stay square and deep, particularly Cover 4 or Match quarters where defenders sit on route breaks and jump the dig. Watch for user-controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow middle, if a defender lurks the throwing window for the dig it forces a difficult decision, so be ready to check down to the HB immediately.
Usage Tips
Look at the cornerback depth before the snap, tight press alignment on the pivot receiver is exactly what this route is designed to defeat since the double move at the top of the stem creates immediate separation.
Use the deep corner route from the outside receiver to hold the safety over the top, this clears the throwing lane for the dig route to work underneath in the intermediate middle of the field.
Against zone coverage, progress to the TE's deep crosser since it settles into soft spots between zone drops, especially versus Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the underneath defenders sit short.
Use the HB's flat/wheel release as your checkdown against blitz looks, if the defense brings extra rushers this route gets you an easy completion and keeps the play on schedule.
Pair this play with Fork Z-Dig or Z Dagger in your play-calling sequence, since both stress the middle of the field with digging routes and force linebackers to guess between shallow and deep crossing patterns.
