HB Power O out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk is a gap scheme run play that pulls the backside guard through the hole to lead block for the HB while the offensive line down blocks to seal the point of attack. The diagram shows the HB taking a slight lateral step before pressing downhill behind the pulling lineman, with the offensive line executing down blocks and a kickout at the point of attack. This is a run play designed to overpower a gap and create a vertical crease, not a man or zone beater passing concept, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the pulling guard's block, read the kickout at the point of attack, and decide whether to bend the run backside or continue downhill through the designed hole.
Defensive Reads
Watch for the Mike linebacker's alignment pre-snap, a stacked or heavy box signals the defense is sitting on the run and Power O may get gang tackled at the line. Key the pulling guard's kickout block, if the user controlled defender crashes down and blows up the puller before the HB clears the hole, bounce outside immediately. Look for edge defenders squeezing hard down the line, aggressive edge crash defeats the frontside gap and forces a cutback read. Check for blitz packages sending extra defenders through the A or B gap, a well timed nano blitz can beat the pulling lineman before he reaches the point of attack. Two high safety shells with light boxes are where this play hits hardest, since the extra gap defender is removed and the down blocks can seal the alley cleanly.
Usage Tips
Use HB Power O on early downs like first and second and short to medium distance to keep the defense honest against your pass-heavy calls out of this same personnel grouping.
Check the box count and linebacker depth pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider audibling to a perimeter run or a quick pass instead.
Identify one high safety looks versus two high shells before the snap, one high usually means the extra defender is in the box and Power O will need the HB to bounce it if the frontside gets clogged.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set to keep defenders guessing between gap and zone schemes, then mix in Fk Cheat Outside Zone as a misdirection changeup.
Use this play situationally on early downs to set up PA Corner or PA Behind Fk Cheat Post Cross later in the drive once the defense starts cheating linebackers into the box.
