Breakdown

RPO Zone Alert Snag is a run/pass option built out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the HB running a give-read handoff to the boundary while the backside receiver takes off on a deep over/go route across the field, giving the quarterback a run key versus a pull key based on the play side defender's reaction. This is a true RPO, using the run action to hold linebackers while the alert receiver stretches the field vertically as a big play answer against overaggressive zone or run fits. The primary read progression is fast: key the play side flow defender first to decide give or throw, then work the alert route if the numbers say pass.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker or overhang defender at the snap, if he crashes down on run action that is your green light to pull and throw the alert route. Check safety depth pre-snap, a single high safety cheating toward the box signals man or Cover 3 run support that this RPO exploits. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers sitting in zone drops can shut down both the run key and the alert throw, forcing a tougher decision. User controlled defenders flying downhill on the run fake open up the backside alert route immediately, throw with anticipation before they can recover. Blitzes off the edge can disrupt the mesh point, so account for overload pressure pre-snap and be ready to get the ball out on rhythm if the defense brings extra rushers.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing run fit before the snap so your run/pass key is clean at the snap.

Identify single high versus two high shells before the snap. Against single high with an aggressive box, the give read is live all game.

If the defense shows two high with soft corners, pull the ball immediately and throw off the alert route without hesitating on your run key.

Pair this play with Inside Zone and Outside Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect the run fit every snap, making your RPO key more reliable.

Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when defenses are more likely to sell out on run support and open up the alert throw.
