Breakdown

Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk lines up with two receivers stacked to the left, a TE attached to the line, and an outlet HB. The two left receivers run a deep crosser and a corner route that clear out the top of the defense while the inside receiver runs a low shallow drag all the way across the formation, and the HB releases into a shallow flat route to the opposite side for a safety valve. This is a classic man beater built to exploit trail technique and press man with the underneath crosser rubbing off traffic, while the flat and corner stretch zone defenders horizontally and vertically. The primary read starts with the shallow drag working left to right, then progresses to the HB flat route, and finally to the corner and crosser combo on the backside if the underneath routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage defenders trailing the shallow drag will often get picked or rerouted by traffic, so this is a strong answer to Cover 1 and Cover 0 looks. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink deep into zone drops the shallow drag will have a clean throwing lane underneath them. Cover 3 defenses with a hard flat defender can take away the HB route, so be ready to progress to the deep corner route on the backside. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the shallow crossing lane can jump the route, so check for a rat in the middle before committing to the primary read. Against Cover 2, the corner route occupies the deep half defender while the crosser and flat stretch the underneath zones, creating natural conflict for the safety.

Usage Tips

Attack the play on second and medium to long distance when defenses are more likely to sit in zone or off man coverage.

Pre-snap, check for two high safeties, since the shallow drag is deadly against single high man coverage where defenders have to fight through traffic.

If you see a nano blitz or heavy pressure look, hot route the HB flat route into a quick release or check it down immediately as your blitz beater.

Use the shallow drag as your rhythm throw against zone coverage since it settles into soft spots between linebackers and safeties.

Pair this play with Mesh Spot or Mesh Whips in the same set to condition the defense to expect crossing traffic underneath, then hit the corner route deep once linebackers start jumping the shallow.
