Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for the HB out of the backfield, if he widens too fast the dig window opens up big. Against zone coverage, key the flat defender and hook defender relationship, if they collide on the dig route drop the ball to the HB option underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the dig sitting in the void, since the defender covering it has to run all the way across the field. Usage Tips

Read the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow or showing blitz look to the HB option immediately as your answer against pressure.

Use the dig as your primary route versus off man coverage or single high shells where the safety cannot get over the top in time.

If you see two deep safeties splitting the field, trust the corner route on the backside to hold that safety and give the dig room to sit down in the window.
