Breakdown

Corner Strike is a Shotgun 11 personnel pass concept out of the Tight Y Off Wk set that isolates a corner route from the slot as the primary man beater. The outside receiver runs a quick out that turns upfield into a vertical seam, occupying the flat defender while the inside receiver breaks off his stem into the corner route over the top. On the backside, a short in-cut swing route from the flanker acts as a checkdown and zone beater against soft coverage. The read starts with the corner route against single high or man coverage, then works down to the flat/out combo and finally the backside checkdown if the deep shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the corner is aligned tight to the slot receiver, which signals man coverage and a green light for the corner route read. Watch the deep safety rotation at the snap. If the safety rotates toward the corner route side, the quarterback should reset to the out or checkdown. Key the flat defender's depth. If he sinks too far under the out route, expect the corner to sit on the sideline and take away the underneath option. This play struggles against Cover 4 or Cover 2 with two deep safeties, since the corner route runs directly into the deep half defender with no natural rub or pick to clear him out. User-controlled defenders lurking in the intermediate throwing lane can jump the corner route break, so quarterbacks should double clutch or move the safety with eyes before committing to that throw.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety or man coverage shells pre-snap since the corner route wins big against Cover 1 and Cover 3 with no help over the top.

Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz so you can identify if the flat defender is sitting on the out route or bailing to help on the corner.

Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper crossing route if you expect zone coverage, since the built-in in-cut is mainly a checkdown and will not stress a sitting zone defender.

Best called on second or third and medium when defenses are more willing to play man coverage or bring pressure, since the corner route needs time to develop against soft zone.

Pair this play with Smash Y Pivot or PA Corner from the same set to keep defenses guessing between quick game and deep shots off similar formation looks.
