Corner Strike out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk sends the backside X on a quick out while the slot receiver runs a corner route from the middle stack, breaking outside and up the sideline. On the play side, the outside receiver releases vertically before snapping off into a corner route as well, stacking two corner routes on the strong side to create a natural high low against the sideline. The primary read progression starts with the corner route breaking off the vertical stem since it clears out underneath zone defenders first, then works to the deep corner route working behind it, making this a zone beater designed to attack the flat to deep quarter or deep third relationship on one side of the field.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down to one high, since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells are the most vulnerable to the double corner route stack on the play side. Watch the flat defender on the play side after the snap, if he sinks too deep on the underneath corner route it opens a throwing window underneath for a check down, if he stays shallow the underneath corner should sit in the soft spot behind him. Watch for a user controlled lurk defender sitting in the throwing lane between the two corner routes, since a smart user player can jump the underneath corner route and take away the first read, forcing you to progress immediately to the deep corner behind it.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safety shells before the snap since Corner Strike thrives against split safety zone coverages that leave a defined flat to deep quarter relationship for the corner routes to exploit.

Use the backside quick out as a hot route conversion to a hitch or slant if the defense shows man coverage rolled to that side, since the out alone will not create enough separation against tight press man.

Snap the ball on early down and medium to long yardage situations, since the two corner route stack takes time to develop and works best when you have room to let the routes climb the sideline.

Pair Corner Strike with Shuffle HB Corner or PA Corner from the same set to keep the defense guessing between a straight drop back corner shot and a play action version, forcing linebackers and safeties to hesitate on their zone drops.

If the defense shows Cover 3 with a hard flat defender, key the underneath corner route as your first read since it should settle into the void behind the flat defender and in front of the deep third defender.
