Breakdown

Hammer Dagger runs the classic Dagger concept out of a two receiver strong side with a solo receiver backside. The outside receiver on the strong side runs a vertical clearout to take the top off the coverage while the inside slot receiver sits down on a deep dig that settles into the vacated middle window. Underneath, the TE runs a quick out to the flat, the RB releases into a whip route out of the backfield, and the backside X runs an in cut, giving you a full field stretch with the dig as your primary read against zone and the clearout to dig combo as your man beater versus man coverage.

Defensive Reads

Cover 3 defenses struggle here because the deep third defender has to choose between staying with the clearout vertical or sinking under the dig, and either choice opens a throwing lane. Cover 2 shells get stressed since the two deep safeties cannot both cover the clearout and the underneath dig crossing behind the linebackers, making this a strong Cover 2 beater as tagged. Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sinks hard with the dig route the QB needs to check down quickly to the RB whip or TE out before the window closes. Man coverage with a single high safety is vulnerable because the dig has a natural rub off the clearout route, so look for the corner trailing the dig receiver getting picked off by traffic underneath. Blitz heavy looks with a lurking linebacker in the middle of the field can jump the dig route, so if you see a Mike linebacker cheating toward the strong side pre-snap, be ready to hit the backside in route or the flat route instead.

Usage Tips

Look for two high safeties pre-snap since that tells you the dig has room to sit down between the hashes without a deep middle defender crashing it.

Hot route the RB whip into a shallow drag or check him down as a release valve if the dig is not open, especially against heavy pressure looks.

This play shines on second and long or third and medium because the dig route sits at 12 to 15 yards and the clearout occupies the deep defenders long enough for the QB to climb the pocket.

Pair Hammer Dagger with Smash Dagger or Z Dagger in the same set so the defense cannot key on the clearout to dig shell after seeing it once.

Against man coverage, user the clearout receiver briefly at the snap to draw the corner off his path, then switch back to the QB for the deep dig throw once the window opens.
