Cheat Outside Zone is a zone run play out of Shotgun Tight Y Off Wk with 11 personnel. The diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally with a zone blocking scheme, while the HB takes a stretch path to the play side edge, reading blockers and cutting off the flow of the offensive line. This is a pure zone run play, not a man or zone beater in the pass sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is playside cutback lane to backside cutback if the edge gets clogged.
Watch for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard down the line, which signals an outside contain problem you can exploit with a bounce outside. Check safety depth pre-snap, if a safety is stacked in the box expect an extra run fitter and be ready to cut this back against the grain. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows too fast to the edge the cutback lane opens immediately behind the center-guard double team. Nano blitzes and A-gap pressure packages can blow this up before the zone blocks set, so be ready to check into a quick pass if you see stacked defensive tackles pre-snap. Cover 3 and Cover 1 run support looks with aggressive linebacker fits are the most vulnerable shells against this outside zone concept.
Use pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or defensive back toward the run strength, which tips run blitz or edge overload.
Run this out of neutral downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep defenses honest against both inside and outside zone looks.
Pair this play with Fk Cheat Outside Zone or Inside Zone in your play-calling sequence to keep linebackers guessing on run fits.
If you see stacked boxes with 8 defenders in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot off this same formation like PA Fk Cheat Post Cross.
User the fullback or lead blocker at the point of attack to seal the edge defender and create a bigger cutback window for the HB.
