RPO Glance Post is a run-pass option out of Shotgun Normal Y Off Close with 11 personnel. Pre-snap the line is set for an inside run look while the backside slot runs a quick glance route and the outside receiver on that side runs a shallow out, giving the quarterback a run read tied to the second-level defender. On the front side, the tight end or receiver near the formation releases vertically up the seam into a post that stretches the safety over the top. The primary read progression starts with the run/pass key defender for the RPO glance, then works to the post if the safety bites down on the run action, making this a zone beater designed to punish light boxes and single-high shells.
Defensive Reads
Watch the alignment of the linebacker or slot defender over the glance route, if he is pinched inside pre-snap he is likely the run key and will crash on the give, opening the glance throw. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells before the snap, single-high leaves the post naked against zone coverage while two-high squeezes the passing window and favors the run. Post-snap, track the safety's first two steps, if he steps up to fit the run box the post is uncovered behind him for a big play. Man coverage on the outside out route defender can be beaten with the shallow out combo if he is playing off, but tight press man on that side signals a run check is safer. A defense that walks a linebacker to the line pre-snap and shows blitz timing off the edge can beat this RPO before the quarterback reads the box, so watch for overload fronts and be ready to get the ball out immediately on the glance.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage when defenses are showing run-heavy boxes to threaten both levels at once.
Read the second level defender assigned to the glance before the snap, if he is sitting soft in the box hand it off, if he crashes downhill pull and throw the quick glance.
If the safety rotates down to help in the box or shows single-high pre-snap, take the shot on the post since the deep half will be vacated.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Spot or RPO Zone Peek Glance in your play-calling sequence so defenses cannot sit on the glance key without opening up the post shot.
Motion or check to a run play like Inside Zone if the defense shows heavy two-high shell, since that removes the post window and the glance becomes low value.
