Breakdown

Stick from Singleback Y Trips lines up with a trips bunch to the right and a single receiver backside. The backside X runs a shallow drag that angles upfield after five yards, while the trips side gives you a vertical seam/flat combo underneath a corner-breaking route on the outside boundary. The trips concept is the classic Stick shape: one receiver settles at the sit route (flat), one climbs the seam vertically, and the outside man works to the corner, giving you an instant answer against both man and zone coverage. Primary read progression starts with the seam/vertical route to see if a linebacker or safety opens a throwing window, then works down to the stick/flat man underneath, with the backside drag as your late checkdown against overplayed trips coverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check the strong safety depth over the trips side, a shallow safety alignment signals a possible Cover 2 or man look that leaves the seam vulnerable. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens with the sit route immediately that usually means zone coverage and the seam window opens quickly. Look for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the shallow middle zone, this is the classic lurk threat that jumps the stick route, so double check that window before throwing underneath. Man coverage with no safety help over the trips side gets exposed fast because the stick and seam combo creates natural picks and separation against tight man technique. A hard blitz from the weak side away from trips can beat this play if the backside drag route is your only answer, so account for pressure with quick protection slides or a hot route on the backside blocker.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route check to see if the defense shifts a linebacker toward the trips bunch, that tells you if they are playing zone matchup or straight man.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, key the flat defender first, if he sinks with the seam route the stick route underneath is wide open for an easy conversion.

On third and short or third and medium, this is a premier stick concept play because the underneath sit route gives you a built in checkdown that beats both blitz and coverage without needing to hold the ball.

Pair this with Four Verticals or Y-Seam Curl from the same Y Trips set to keep the defense honest on the seam read, then come back to Stick once they start jumping the vertical route.

If the corner presses the outside trips receiver, use a quick out or slant hot route on him to counter man press before the snap.
