HB Stretch out of Singleback Y Trips 11 personnel is a pure outside zone run play, with the offensive line flowing laterally to seal the edge and the HB taking the handoff on a lateral path before pressing the perimeter and picking his cut lane. The diagram shows all three trips receivers releasing vertically to occupy the cornerbacks and secondary, clearing space for the stretch action rather than running any read-based route combos. There is no man or zone beater route concept here since this is strictly a zone run play, and the primary read progression is for the HB to press the line, read the flow of the zone blocks from playside to backside, and cut upfield at the first crease that opens.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a run-heavy front with linebackers creeping to the line, since HB Stretch struggles against gap-disciplined fronts with contain defenders staying home on the edge. Watch safety depth and rotation, because a single high safety or two deep shell often means fewer defenders in the box to string out the zone action. Post-snap, key the defensive ends and outside linebackers to see if they are crashing hard inside or maintaining outside leverage, since outside leverage forces the HB to cut back sooner. User-controlled defenders who shoot gaps aggressively or spy the backfield can blow this play up before the zone fully develops, so identify user pursuit angles immediately after the snap. This run is most vulnerable to fast flow linebackers and edge defenders with contain assignments, so if you see a 4-3 under front or an odd front with a nine technique, expect the cutback lane to be the better option rather than trying to bounce it outside.
Run HB Stretch on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against your play-action shots. Check the box count pre-snap and only pull the trigger if you have a numbers advantage or if the defense shows a light front with safeties rotated deep. Use your HB stick input to manually bounce or cut back based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow, since patience at the mesh point is critical against fast-flowing linebackers. Pair this with PA Stretch and HB Counter from the same look to keep defenders freezing on the zone action, then punish overaggressive flow with the counter's backside cutback lane. Against defenses that stack the box, motion one of the trips receivers to check for man coverage before snapping, which also sets up HB Slip Screen as a change of pace call.
