Breakdown

WR Post out of Singleback Y Trips is a man beating concept built around the trips side isolating the backside X on a one on one post route while the trips receivers work a combo to hold the safety and clear space underneath. The post is the clear first read, attacking the void between the deep half safeties or beating off man coverage if the corner does not get a proper jam. Protection is a standard five man slide, giving the QB a full progression to work from the post to the underneath trips routes if the deep shot is not there.

Defensive Reads

Check the single side safety depth at the snap, if he stays deep and centered the post will be tighter to throw, if he cheats toward the trips side the post window opens wide. Watch for Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 shells, both can squeeze the post throw if the flat or hook defender carries width, so timing the throw before the safety breaks is critical. Man coverage with a single high safety is the ideal beat, the post route stresses the deep middle before help can rotate over. Look for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the throwing lane on the post read, user controlled defenders that shade inside can bait an interception if the QB stares down the route. Cover 2 with aggressive corner jams can disrupt the post stem, if the corner reroutes the receiver at the line the timing of the throw needs to be delayed to let the route develop.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at the single side corner before the snap, if he is playing off man or shaded outside the post has room to sit down in the window against zone or split the defender in man.

Use the post as an alert shot play on early downs, if the safety shows two high and rotates late you can hit the post for an explosive gain before the rotation settles.

Hot route the single WR to a fade or go if you see press man with no safety help over the top, this removes the natural break point the post relies on and gives you a straight line win instead.

Pair this play in sequence with Curls or Stick from the same Y Trips set so the defense sees the same trips look and cannot key on the single receiver side pre-snap.

Best called on second or third and medium to long, distances that force the defense out of heavy run fits and into coverage shells that respect the deep post threat.
