This WR Screen out of Singleback Y Trips is a quick-hitting screen pass designed to get the ball out to the perimeter receiver with blockers in front. The outside receiver runs a shallow screen route, sitting just past the line to catch the pass while two trips receivers release upfield to seal defenders, and the backside X receiver runs a go route to clear out coverage. The primary read is the screen receiver on the boundary, with the QB's blocking receivers (the two stacked trips WRs) working to wall off cornerbacks and nickel defenders. This is a pure screen play built to counter aggressive pass rushes and blitzes, not a true man or zone beater in the route-combo sense.
Watch for the flat defender or cornerback aligned over the screen side receiver, since he is the first defender who must be accounted for by the blockers. Identify if the defense is running a zone blitz or nano blitz, as fast interior pressure can beat the screen before blockers get set. Key on any user-controlled linebacker or safety sitting in a lurk position near the flat, since a heads-up defender jumping the route can blow up the screen for a loss. Press man coverage on the trips receivers can disrupt the blocking release timing, so check if the corners are jamming at the line before the snap. Defenses that play disciplined zone drops with defensive linemen dropping into passing lanes (like Cover 4 spy or delayed pressure) tend to shut this screen down by clogging the throwing lane and screen lane simultaneously.
Call this play when you diagnose overload blitzes or aggressive edge pressure pre-snap, since the quick screen negates the rush entirely.
Check the defensive line spacing before the snap. If you see wide nine ends or a heavy blitz look, the screen has a clean lane to develop.
User the lead blocking WR in the trips bunch to manually seal the first defender who threatens the screen lane rather than trusting the CPU block.
Pair this with Bubble Screen or HB Slip Screen in your play-calling sequence to condition the defense to jump screens, then hit them with PA Zone Shot or Sluggo Seam off the same formation for a big shot play.
Best used on early downs or obvious passing situations against defenses showing Cover 0 or man press, since defenders crashing downhill get sealed by the trips blockers.
