PA WR In from Singleback Y Trips (11 personnel) opens with a play-action fake to sell the run before the quarterback works the pass concept. On the backside, the isolated X receiver runs a deep in route that cuts hard across the middle of the field, sitting down over the ball or working through traffic depending on coverage depth. To the trips side, one receiver clears out on a deep corner route up the sideline while the underneath receiver runs a shallow drag/in that crosses the formation and settles as a checkdown option. This is a play-action man beater at its core, using the backside in route to attack linebackers who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progressing from the backside in route to the trips side clear-out route and finally down to the shallow drag as the outlet.
Key on linebacker depth immediately after the snap since a hard bite on the run fake opens a throwing lane for the backside in route. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the underneath crossing routes, as a lurking linebacker or nickel corner can jump the shallow drag and create a turnover opportunity. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells pre-snap, since single-high (Cover 1 or Cover 3) leaves the deep corner route on the trips side vulnerable to a big play against a slower linebacker in man coverage. Cover 3 zone defenses can be exploited if the flat defender widens too far with the corner route, leaving the intermediate in route uncovered. Aggressive blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge can disrupt the play-action fake, so check for stacked defensive ends or overload blitz looks that eliminate the quarterback's time to work through the progression.
Use this play on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when defenses are more likely to respect the run fake and bite on linebacker flow.
Check the pre-snap defensive alignment for linebackers creeping into the box, since a heavy box signals they are vulnerable to the play-action and the backside in route will have a soft window.
If you see two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells), prioritize the deep corner route on the trips side since it can split the safety and corner in the deep quarter or half.
Hot route the shallow drag receiver into a deeper crossing route if you diagnose zone coverage with linebackers sitting underneath, giving your quarterback a cleaner throwing lane.
Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in a drive to condition the defense to bite on run action, then call PA WR In to cash in on the linebacker overreaction.
