HB Blunt Dive is a downhill run play out of Singleback Y Trips that sends the HB straight through the interior of the line on a quick hitting dive path, as shown by the short red run arrow directly behind the line of scrimmage. The offensive line down blocks to seal the interior gaps while the trips receiver bunch and the backside receiver simply run off their defenders to occupy coverage rather than block. This is a pure run play designed to win with gap integrity and double teams at the point of attack, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial dive lane first, then bounce to the backside cutback lane if the frontside gap gets clogged.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 front with two off-ball linebackers stacked tight, since heavier fronts with extra defenders in the box will fill the dive lane quickly and shut this down. Check safety depth, if both safeties are rolled deep in a two high shell there is likely one less run defender in the box, which favors the interior dive lane hitting for positive yardage. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and mike linebacker, if they read run instantly and flow to the play side gap without hesitation the play will be stuffed at or near the line. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the interior gaps or crashing down as an extra run fitter, this is the biggest threat to blowing up Blunt Dive since it eliminates the natural cutback lane. Look for blitz packages that bring extra defenders through the A and B gaps pre-snap, since Blunt Dive relies on initial gap integrity and any unblocked penetrator up the middle will drop this run for a loss.
Use HB Blunt Dive on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage when you want to stay ahead of the chains without exposing the ball to a shotgun style RPO look.
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against your five blockers, consider audibling into a play-action shot off this same look instead.
Pair this play with HB Dive and Inside Zone from the same Y Trips set so the defense cannot key run direction based on formation, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they are crashing hard downhill pre-snap this is a great candidate to fake with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Power O later in the drive to punish overaggressive fits.
User the fullback or lead blocker if available to manually seal the first defender who threatens the dive lane, this manual assignment often decides whether the run hits for four yards or fifteen.
