Scene 44-6 out of Singleback Y Trips is a play-action shot play built off a trips bunch look designed to isolate the backside receiver on a deep vertical while the trips side occupies the underneath defenders. The blocking scheme sells inside zone run action to hold linebackers and safeties before the QB rolls his eyes to the single receiver for a go or post concept, making this a man beater against aggressive corners playing outside leverage. The primary read progression starts with the backside deep shot, then works to the trips side intermediate crossers or flat option if the safety rotates over the top.
Read the backside safety pre-snap, if he is aligned in the box or cheating down to stop the run the deep shot route is wide open behind him Watch the corner over the single receiver, tight man coverage with no deep help is a green light while soft zone leverage signals a bail to the underneath trips concepts Identify Cover 3 by the single high safety rotation, this leaves the deep route in a soft spot between the corner and the rotating safety Key the linebacker depth after the snap, if they bite hard on the play fake the intermediate crossing routes on the trips side sit in the vacated zone Beware disciplined Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with two deep safeties, this takes away the vertical shot and forces you into the underneath checkdown progression
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the play fake actually respects the run threat and freezes the linebackers
Check the backside cornerback pre-snap, if he is playing tight man with no safety help over the top this is an automatic shot play take the top read
Hot route the trips side outside receiver into a quick out if you see Cover 2 shells since the flat defender will be occupied by the play fake
Pair this with HB Power O or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense starts biting on the run action, then dial up Scene 44-6 to hit the play-action window
Use max protect or check the RB into a chip release if the defense shows a heavy blitz look, this gives the QB time to let the deep route develop
