Scene 44-6 out of Singleback Y Trips is a trips based passing concept built to attack zone coverage while still giving you answers versus man. The trips side works a combination of high low routes designed to stress the flat and hook defenders, while the backside single receiver runs an isolation route to hold the corner and safety on that half of the field. Your primary read starts with the trips side, working from the shortest route to the deepest breaking route in the concept, then you check back to the backside single receiver if the trips side is capped or if the defense rotates a safety over the top.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, check safety depth. Two high safeties usually means the defense is sitting in a zone shell that this concept can pick apart underneath. Watch the flat defender on the trips side. If he widens with the shortest route, the middle route in the combo should sit down in the void behind him. Post snap, key any user controlled linebacker or safety flowing toward the trips side. A heavy lurk threat there signals you should reset your eyes to the backside single receiver. If the corner on the single receiver side presses hard and shows no help over the top, expect man coverage and be ready to hot route that receiver into a quicker breaking route. Beware disguised zone blitzes off the trips side edge. If the slot corner crashes down at the snap, get the ball out on the shortest trips route before the pocket collapses.

Usage Tips

Motion the slot receiver in the trips bunch pre snap if allowed to force the defense to declare man or zone coverage before the snap.

If you see a two high safety shell, work the trips side routes underneath since the deep middle should be occupied and the corners will sit in zone drops.

Against man coverage with a single high safety, hot route the backside receiver into a quick slant or speed out to give yourself a fast throwing lane away from the trips traffic.

Use this on second and medium or third and short since the underneath trips routes convert quickly and give you a low risk completion option if the defense sits back in zone.
