HB Draw out of Singleback Y Trips is a pure run play designed to punish aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. The diagram shows the offensive line and TE holding their blocks at the snap to sell pass protection while the HB delays before bursting through the middle of the formation, with the three trips receivers and backside WR running vertical routes to occupy the secondary and clear underneath space. The primary read is patience: let the initial rush develop, then follow the natural cutback lane created by the delayed handoff before the second level fills.
Man coverage with no extra run support in the box is the ideal shell since defenders are focused on receivers instead of the backfield. Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz packages get gashed if the user does not spy the RB immediately after the snap. Watch for a defensive tackle or linebacker sitting still in the A or B gap, as a disciplined defender who reads through the offensive line kills this play instantly. Zone drops with linebackers flowing hard to the trips side leave the backside cutback lane wide open for a big gain. If the defense shows a run blitz pre-snap with stacked linebackers crashing downhill, this play loses its delay advantage and should be checked out of.
Call this on early downs after showing pass-heavy tendencies from Y Trips to freeze linebackers who key on the trips side. Watch pre-snap for stacked fronts or overload blitzes since aggressive edge rushers will over-pursue and open the cutback lane. Use manual motion or a slight delay on the RB before committing to the hole, letting blockers settle first. Pair this in your play-calling sequence with Y Shallow Cross or Curls Combo from the same set so the defense respects the pass look off identical formation and personnel. Best used on 1st and 10 or after a string of quick passes to keep run-blitz defenders honest.
