PA Draw Shot from Singleback Y Trips is a shot play disguised as a play-action draw, designed to hit a deep shot route off run action once the defense bites. The diagram shows two vertical shot routes on the trips side, one wheeling up the boundary from the outside receiver and one streaking up the seam from the inside slot, crossing at the top of their stems to create natural rub separation against man coverage. On the backside, the single receiver runs an out and up, breaking outside then climbing vertically to attack a cheating corner or a safety who bites on the initial run fake. The primary read progression starts backside with the out and up as a hot beater against aggressive man coverage, then works to the crossing verticals on the trips side, with the deep seam route as the shot alert if the defense sells the draw fake.
Watch strong side safety depth pre-snap, if he sits shallow or creeps toward the box he is likely biting on run action and the seam route behind him is wide open. Key the flow of linebackers after the snap, if they step up hard on the draw fake it confirms man or zone under coverage and the crossing verticals concept will have room to work. Identify the corner over the backside single receiver, if he plays tight man with no help over the top the out and up will beat him deep on the vertical stem. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1, user the deep middle defender toward the trips side crossing routes since that defender is the only one capable of erasing both verticals. Beware disciplined zone shells like Cover 4 or Cover 2 that keep both safeties deep, since they can rob the shot routes and force you to check down or eat pressure from the draw fake window closing.
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short so the defense respects run action and linebackers step up on the draw fake.
Check pre-snap for single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the crossing verticals exploit man coverage leverage and the deep safety cannot cover both shot routes.
If you see two high safeties or Cover 4, hot route the backside out and up into a quick comeback or drag to avoid throwing into a deep half defender sitting on top.
Pair this play with HB Draw or Inside Zone earlier in a drive so the defense keys run action, then hit this shot play once linebackers start crashing downhill on run fakes.
Use motion or a play action fake with the RB to freeze the second level defenders, giving the crossing verticals extra time to separate before you pull the trigger.
