Breakdown

Double China is a trips-side flood concept out of Singleback Y Trips with a check release RB flat route on the backside. The trips receivers stack the defense vertically with a corner route from the outside WR, a deep in from the slot, and a shallow curl flat from the third receiver, while the backside X runs an in route across the field to sit in the middle of the field void. This is a versatile zone beater built to flood one side, though the corner-in combo also creates natural picks against man coverage, and the primary read progression starts with the corner route against Cover 2, works down to the deep in as the middle read, then settles to the curl flat and check release RB against zone drops underneath.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a two-high shell signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and invites the corner route read first. Watch the flat defender on the trips side since if he widens with the curl flat route it opens a bigger window for the corner route behind him. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker or any user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the deep in throwing lane since that read gets shut down against a sim pressure or a defense that spins the safety down to rob the middle. Against man coverage, look for natural traffic and picks created by the corner and deep in routes crossing near the trips stack, which favors the quarterback in one-on-one leverage situations. Blitz packages with man coverage behind them can shut this down quickly if the backside X in route runs into a hot blitzer, so check protection or hot route the RB to block if you see extra rushers on the backside.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hot route on the backside X in route to identify if the defense is rolling to a two-high shell before the snap.

Against Cover 2, target the corner route on timing since it sits in the honey hole between the flat defender and the deep half safety.

Against Cover 3, work the deep in over the middle since it crosses in front of the single high safety and behind the underneath zone defenders.

If the user drops a linebacker into the deep in throwing lane, check down quickly to the curl flat or the RB flat route since both sit underneath busy zone drops.

Pair this play with Curls or Y-Seam Curl in your play calling sequence so the defense has to respect both a flood concept and a vertical seam shot from the same trips formation look.
