Breakdown

Slot Out is a five-man route concept out of Singleback Y Trips that spreads the field with three receivers to the trips side and a single receiver backside. At the snap, the backside X runs a deep comeback, the two inside trips receivers run a quick out and a deep crossing route that clears out to the opposite sideline, and the outside trips receiver releases vertically then breaks flat with an out route while the slot receiver runs a curl or hook underneath. The concept is a zone beater built to attack the flat and intermediate zones with horizontal stretch, with the primary read starting on the underneath out route to the trips side before working to the crossing route and comeback as coverage rotates.

Defensive Reads

Identify the flat defender to the trips side pre-snap, if he is playing off or bailing deep the underneath out route will be wide open immediately. Watch for a Cover 3 shell with three deep defenders, this concept is designed to exploit the intermediate voids that Cover 3 leaves underneath. User a linebacker to spy the deep crossing route since that receiver is running through multiple zones and can be picked off by a rangy defender sitting in the middle of the field. If the defense shows Cover 2 with two deep safeties, the comeback route from the backside X becomes a strong answer versus a hard corner playing off in a soft cushion. Look for blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the quick out route from the trips side serves as a built in answer against pressure.

Usage Tips

Use this play on second and medium or third and short when defenses are more likely to sit in zone coverage rather than press man.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the flat defender to the trips side, if he widens with the slot out route immediately the crossing route behind him will be open.

Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells, prioritize the out route since the deep crossing route is designed to clear space rather than serve as the first look.

Hot route the backside X into a shorter hitch if you see press man to give yourself a quick answer against blitz looks.

Pair this play with HB Dive or Inside Zone earlier in a series so defenses respect the run fit, then come back to Slot Out to hit the flat defender vacating a soft zone.
