Breakdown

Deep Comebacks out of Singleback Y Trips lines up three receivers to the trips side with a lone receiver backside and the HB staying in to protect. The backside X runs a deep comeback breaking back to the sideline, the two inside trips receivers run comebacks that settle and turn back toward the quarterback, and the outside trips receiver (the TE/slot) pushes vertically before working an out toward the sideline as the underneath flat/curl option. This is a man beater concept designed to exploit tight coverage by having receivers stem vertically then snap back downhill, creating separation right as the corner turns his hips, with the primary read starting on the backside comeback to X and progressing to the trips side comebacks if the single side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Check the corners pre-snap for off man alignment or soft press, since a corner sitting deeper than seven yards is inviting the comeback route to sit down in front of him. Watch the single high safety post-snap, if he stays home in the middle of the field it confirms Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the comebacks should have room to work against the sideline. Key the underneath linebackers for a hook or curl zone drop, since a zone shell with linebackers sitting under the comebacks will jump the route the moment the receiver turns around. Identify press man corners at the line, because if the corner is jamming at the snap the comeback route timing gets disrupted and the QB should look elsewhere in the progression. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure off the edge, since this play holds the HB in to block and can get exposed if extra rushers come free before the routes develop.

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells like Cover 3 or Cover 1 pre-snap since the comeback breaks are most effective against corners playing off man or trail technique. Use the backside X comeback as your first read versus Cover 1 because it isolates one defender with no help underneath. Hot route the trips side inside receiver into a shallow drag if you diagnose zone coverage, since the comebacks lose value against zone defenders sitting in curl or hook zones. Pair this play with Four Verticals and PA Corner Post in the same set to keep defenders honest, since all three concepts attack the same vertical stems before breaking different directions. Best called on second and long or third and medium when defenses are more likely to play off coverage and give up the cushion needed for the comeback route to work.
