PA Cross Up is a play-action pass out of Singleback Y Trips that sells the run fake before attacking the middle of the field with crossing routes designed to pick apart man coverage. The trips side runs a mesh-style crossing concept that creates natural rub picks against man defenders, while the backside receiver works a complementary route to hold the single high safety. This is a man beater at its core, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow crosser working underneath, then climbs to the deeper crossing route as it clears the linebacker level, with the backside route as a late checkdown against zone drops.
Pre-snap, look for linebacker depth and alignment, stacked or crashed linebackers signal run blitz support that the play-action will exploit Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal shell for this concept since the crossers create natural picks that man defenders cannot fight through Zone shells with two deep safeties and linebackers sitting in shallow zones can clog the crossing lanes and force a checkdown, so identify Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells pre-snap Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the middle hook zone or lurking underneath the crossers, since that defender can jump the shallow route and bait a turnover Fast interior pressure or a delayed blitz off the edge can disrupt the play-action fake timing, so if you see blitz indicators pre-snap consider a quick throw or an audible instead
Use this play on early downs, second and short or third and short, when the defense is likely to bite on the run fake and step up into the box
Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety or a defense showing run support usually means the play-action will hold linebackers long enough for the crossers to separate
Hot route the backside receiver into a deeper route if you diagnose two high safeties or a clear zone shell, since the crossers alone will not fully stress a soft zone
Pair this play with HB Power O or HB Dive from the same set earlier in a series so the defense respects the run action and commits downhill on this play-action shot
Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the shallow crosser quickly and rely on the rub to shed man coverage before the pass rush closes the pocket
