Breakdown

PA Corner Post is a play-action shot play out of Singleback Y Trips that uses run action to hold the linebackers before attacking downfield. The trips side has the outside receiver running a corner route to occupy the deep sideline while the inside slot receiver breaks off a post over the middle, and the backside single receiver runs a deep dig style route breaking to the outside. This is a man beater built to create a natural high low crossing conflict on any defender trying to carry the post while the corner route clears the sideline, so the primary read progression starts with the post working inside leverage before working back to the corner route on the trips side.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify single high versus two high safety shells since single high leaves the post route isolated on a linebacker or nickel defender who cannot match speed vertically. Watch cornerback depth on the trips side outside receiver: press or tight alignment signals man coverage that the corner post concept is designed to beat. Post snap key the middle linebacker drop depth, if he sits shallow to defend the run fake the post route will beat him for a big gap in the seam. User controlled safeties who bail hard to double the post will open up the corner route breaking to the sideline for an easier completion. Zone blitzes or cover 3 buzz looks with a fast flowing linebacker to the trips side can undercut the post route, so recognize disguised blitz packages pre-snap by reading linebacker depth and edge alignment before committing to this shot play.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or in second and long situations where the defense expects run action off your run game tendencies. Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties cheating toward the trips side, the backside dig becomes your first read since it attacks the vacated middle. If the corner route on the trips side draws a hard flat defender jump, hot route the post to sit down as a man beater against man coverage. Pair this play in your call sheet with HB Stretch or Inside Zone from the same Singleback Y Trips set to sell the same run action look before hitting the shot play. Against aggressive user blitzers, throw the post quickly off the play fake since the deep drop protection window is short with only a limited number of blockers staying in.
