Off the fake, the boundary receiver runs a corner route to stretch the sideline, the inside trips receiver breaks off a deep post to attack the middle of the field, and the remaining trips receiver runs a shallow drag underneath as the checkdown. The run fake pulls the second level up, creating a two man deep stretch, so this is a man beater designed to isolate the safety and corner on a high low read with the post as the primary progression against single high looks and the corner as the primary answer against two high shells.

Defensive Reads

Read the middle of the field pre-snap, one deep safety means Cover 1 or Cover 3 and the post route is your first look since there is no safety help in the middle. Two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4, which shuts down the post but opens a window for the corner route in the deep outside third. Watch the flat defender and curl to flat zone dropper after the snap, if they sink hard to cover the corner, the drag underneath becomes open against zone coverage that vacates the shallow area. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the ideal beat for this play since both the corner and post win on separation against trailing defenders. Be wary of a delayed blitz or contain defender crashing the pocket during the play action fake, since the deep routes take time to develop and a fast pass rush can force you off your first read before the post or corner comes open.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see one deep safety in the middle of the field, load up on the post because the corner route has no help over the top. Against two high shells, prioritize the corner route since the post will run into the deep half defender. Sell the play action fake by holding the ball fully before your drop so linebackers commit to the run and open passing lanes for the post. Use this play on second and long or first down in scoring range where defenses are more likely to sit in single high or man coverage to stop the run. Pair this play with Deep Comebacks or WR Post from the same set so defenses cannot key on the play fake or the deep shot tendency, and mix in HB Mid Zone or Inside Zone earlier in the game to make the run fake believable.
