Breakdown
PA Read out of Singleback Y Trips shows a play-action shot play with a deep vertical seam from the inline TE, a crossing dig from the outside trips receiver that sits over the middle, and a shallow drag/flat route from the slot receiver that bends underneath the crosser. The backside receiver runs a corner route breaking to the sideline off the play fake, giving the quarterback a full-field stretch. Blocking is play-action, so the offensive line sells run fakes up front while the QB works his progression from the deep seam down to the flat, reading the middle of the field defender to decide between the dig and the drag.
Defensive Reads
Watch for a single high safety who stays home in the deep middle, that alignment tells you Cover 3 or Cover 1 and the seam route will be your priority target If both safeties are deep pre-snap in a two high shell, expect the dig route to sit in the soft spot between the underneath zone and the deep half defenders User the middle linebacker to jump the dig route since that is the primary intermediate window this play attacks Look for a corner blitz off the edge that the play-action fake cannot account for, that pressure forces a quick throw to the flat route If the defense shows Cover 2 with the corners jamming outside, the corner route can get squeezed, so expect the QB to work back inside to the seam or drag
Usage Tips
Check the middle linebacker depth before the snap since a shallow drop signals man coverage and opens the seam route immediately
Use this against single high safety shells since the dig and seam attack the void behind the linebackers before the safety can rotate over
Hot route the backside corner route into a quick out if you see press man on the outside to speed up the timing of the play fake
Pair this with Y Shallow Cross or Mesh earlier in a drive so defenses respect the shallow crossers and bite harder on the run fake here
On third and medium, prioritize the drag route as a checkdown since it settles into open grass against zone drops after the initial fake
