HB Stretch Alert X Lookie is an outside zone run play out of Singleback Y Trips with the X receiver alerted to run a Lookie route (a comeback style hitch breaking back toward the sideline) instead of blocking, giving the offense a built in alert pass option if the defense sells out to stop the run. The diagram shows the HB taking the handoff and stretching wide toward the play side edge while the offensive line flows in unison for outside zone blocking, and the alerted X receiver releases vertically before snapping back outside on the Lookie route as a lone route on the backside. The Y and other trips receivers stay in to help seal the edge, so the primary read progression is the HB reading the stretch blocking flow (cutback, bend, or bounce) first, with the QB only looking to the X Lookie alert if the defense crashes hard enough pre-snap or at the snap to warrant the alert throw.
Watch for defenses stacking the box with linebackers creeping up to the line pre-snap, since that is the trigger for the offense to alert the X Lookie route. Check cornerback alignment on the X receiver, soft or off man coverage invites the Lookie alert throw for an easy completion against a defender playing off the line. Read linebacker flow and gap discipline post-snap, if the defense flows hard to the play side with disciplined gap fits and a strong edge defender, the cutback lane disappears and the run gets contained. Look for user controlled defenders spying the backside or sitting in shallow zones near the X Lookie alert, since a smart user player can jump the alert route and blow up the quick throw. Beware of overload blitzes from the play side edge, since a fast edge crash from a user rushed defender can beat outside zone before the HB even gets to the stretch point.
Use pre-snap alerts by watching linebacker depth and box count before the snap, and if the box is loaded with 7 or 8 defenders, key in on getting the ball out to the X Lookie instead of forcing the run. This play works best on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are still respecting balanced run and pass tendencies. Combine this with HB Zone Wk Alert Bubble and HB Slip Screen from the same set so defenses cannot consistently sell out to the run side without giving up easy yardage on the perimeter. If the defense shows a hard edge crash or overload blitz look, snap it quickly to the X Lookie alert before the pressure disrupts the timing. Pair this with PA Stretch as a follow up call since the run action and blocking flow look identical, forcing linebackers and safeties to freeze and open up play action shots later in the same series.
