Breakdown

0 1 Trap out of Singleback Y Trips is a gap scheme power run play designed to attack the interior with a trapping lineman kicking out the first threat off the edge of the play side gap. The three trips receivers and the backside TY/TE run vertical release routes that hold the corners and safeties in place, keeping the box honest and preventing extra defenders from crashing down on the run fit. The primary read is the play side guard's trap block on the down lineman, with the HB reading the trap block first and then working through the mike linebacker's fill before deciding to bounce or bang the run based on the leverage created.

Defensive Reads

Key the play side defensive tackle and end pre-snap, if they are crashing hard down the line the trap block will have an easy angle and the run hits fast. Watch the mike linebacker's depth at the snap, a linebacker sitting too far off the line will get walled off late, so shooting a gap immediately as the ball is snapped disrupts the trap timing. User the play side linebacker or a defensive lineman if you suspect trap, since a spy or gap shooter can blow up the pulling lineman before the kick out block is set. Cover 1 or Cover 3 with an aggressive box tends to get gashed if defenders overpursue the trips releases, so staying disciplined with underneath defenders against the run action is critical. Look for the backside safety to fill quickly against light boxes, since a fast trigger from depth can close the cutback lane before the HB reaches the second level.

Usage Tips

Run this out of a base personnel look on early downs when the defense shows a light box with only six or fewer defenders in the run fit.

Check the pre-snap alignment of the mike linebacker, if he is stacked tight over the center he can blow up the trap timing so consider motioning the HB or checking to a different run.

Use the trips side vertical releases to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, if corners bail into deep zones the window for the trap read opens up faster since flow defenders are slower to trigger.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Power O in the same personnel to keep the defense guessing between trap action and gap power without changing your formation tendency.

Best called on 2nd or 3rd and short when defenses are more likely to sell out against the pass or stack the edges, since the trap block exploits aggressive edge rushers.
