Breakdown

Y-Seam Curl out of Singleback Y Trips features a five man route concept with three receivers aligned to the trips side. The inside trips receiver runs a deep seam up the middle of the field while the outside trips receiver breaks into a shallow drag underneath, and the middle trips receiver runs a short out. The backside X runs an out and up while the TE runs a corner route from the formation's strong side, with the backside receiver working an in-cut breakout. This is primarily a zone beater, using the seam route to attack the hole between the deep half and underneath linebackers, with the primary read progressing from the seam route to the corner route on the strong side then working down to the shallow drag as a checkdown against pressure.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and alignment since a single high safety struggles to help over the top on the seam route while two deep safeties can squeeze the window significantly. Watch the middle linebacker's initial drop, if he sinks into the seam lane immediately this play becomes a low percentage throw and you should progress to the corner or drag concept. Cover 3 with a sky or cloud rotation is vulnerable to this seam concept because the flat defender has to widen for the shallow route, opening the seam lane behind him. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the seam route is a green light since most linebackers cannot stay in phase vertically down the middle of the field. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the middle of the field or dropping into a deep lurk technique, as this is the primary counter that shuts down the seam throw and forces the quarterback to the shorter routes.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and medium to third and long when you need to attack the seam against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 2.

Pre-snap, identify if the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, since the seam route wins big against single high looks where the middle linebacker has to widen for the seam-flat combo on the other side.

Hot route the shallow out or drag into a deeper route if you diagnose man coverage, since the base concept is built to punish zone drops rather than beat tight man coverage.

Pair this call with Curls or Curls Combo earlier in a series so the defense starts sitting on underneath zone drops, then hit the seam route for an explosive gain once linebackers start jumping the shorter routes.

If the user controls a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field, look to the corner route on the strong side or check down quickly to the drag rather than forcing the seam throw.
