Slot Drive out of Singleback Y Trips is a Cover 4 beater built around a drive concept combined with a deep dig. The Y trips receiver runs a deep in cutting across the field underneath the two vertical releases from the outside trips receivers, while the backside X receiver runs a dig back across the middle at intermediate depth. The RB releases underneath to the flat as a checkdown, giving the quarterback a clear high-low progression: start with the drive route crossing the field, work down to the dig, then check it down to the flat if both are covered.
Pre-snap, identify two deep safeties splitting the field evenly, which signals Cover 4 and tells you the drive route will have room to work underneath. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, since if he sinks with the drive route it opens up the dig route behind him for a big gain. Watch for cornerback press alignment on the outside trips receivers, which often indicates man coverage underneath a two high shell and makes the crossing routes vulnerable to natural picks. If the defense shows a single high safety with corners playing off, expect Cover 3 zone drops that can undercut the drive route, so be ready to progress quickly to the dig or checkdown. User controlled defenders sitting in the shallow zone or lurking the drive route can jump the throw, so double check the underneath window before committing to the first read.
Look for two high safeties pre-snap since this play is specifically designed to punish Cover 4 shells that struggle to cover the drive route crossing underneath the verticals.
Bang the drive route as your first read against Cover 2 and Cover 4 because the underneath crossers put linebackers in conflict and create natural throwing lanes.
Hot route the RB from a flat release to a chip and release if you are facing a heavy blitz look, since the drive concept needs time to develop against pressure.
Use this on second and medium or third and short distances where the sticks favor the intermediate dig and drive combination rather than needing an explosive vertical shot.
Pair this play in sequence with Four Verticals or Sluggo Seam from the same Y Trips set to keep defenders honest on the deep routes, then come back to Slot Drive once the safeties start cheating up to stop the shallow crossers.
