Slot Drive out of Singleback Y Trips is a Cover 4 beater built on a drive concept that stacks a shallow crosser underneath a deep dig. The backside X runs a deep comeback while the trips side gets a corner route from the outside receiver, a short out from the flat receiver, and the slot man drives across the field underneath with the TE clearing the middle on a deep crossing route. The primary read starts with the drive route working left to right across the field, then works to the corner route if the defense collapses on the shallow crosser, with the deep comeback as a late checkdown against soft zone shells.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he sits shallow to jump the drive route, immediately look to the corner route on the trips side for a window over the top. Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this tells you whether the deep comeback on the backside X is available as a big play outlet. If the defense shows Cover 3 with the flat defender sinking too deep, the underneath drive route becomes wide open for consistent yardage. Man coverage with no safety help over the slot usually means the drive route will win instantly due to the natural rub created by the TE crossing route. Watch for a user lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone, if he shadows the drive route, reset your progression to the corner route or comeback instead of forcing the throw.

Usage Tips

Use this against Cover 4 or Cover 2 shells where safeties sit deep and linebackers have to cover width on the shallow drive route.

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety rotating late. If you see that, be ready to bail off the drive route and hit the deep comeback on the backside for an explosive play.

Hot route the flat receiver into a flat route or seam if you see man coverage across the board with no underneath help, this gives you a quick answer against blitz looks.

This play pairs well with Curls Combo and Y-Seam Curl in your play-calling sequence since all three attack similar zone drops but stress different levels of the field, keeping defenders guessing between shallow and deep throws.

On third and medium, prioritize the drive route since it has enough depth to move the sticks while staying safe from off man corners.
