Sluggo Seam out of Singleback Y Trips lines up with a trips side to the left and a single receiver to the right. The backside X runs a sluggo (slant and go) to attack deep outside, the inline receiver from the trips bunch runs a seam straight up the middle, and the two remaining trips receivers run vertical routes up the numbers, with one working a bit of an out and up. This is a man beater built to hit the sluggo on a double move once the corner bites on the slant, with the seam as your first look against zone drops and the two outside verticals occupying deep defenders. Primary progression is seam first, then sluggo, then work outside to the vertical routes if the middle is clogged.
Pre-snap, identify if the corner over the backside X is playing man press or off man, since that alignment tells you if the sluggo double move will have room to break open. Check safety depth and count. A two high shell with safeties rotating hard to the trips side can undercut the seam route and force you to work the sluggo instead. Post-snap, watch for a user controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field as a lurk threat, since that player can jump the seam route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Look at linebacker depth at the snap. Linebackers sitting shallow in zone drops will clog the seam window, so be ready to reset your eyes to the sluggo or outside verticals. This play struggles against zone coverage with a deep middle defender and against disguised blitzes that bring extra rushers up the gut before the seam route can develop.
Use this play against man coverage looks where you see a corner playing tight or press on the backside X, since the sluggo double move is designed to shake a defender biting on the slant.
Check the middle of the field pre-snap. If you see a single high safety or an empty middle of the field shell, the seam route will have room to work before the safety can rotate over.
Hot route the underneath trips receiver into a quick option or drag if you are worried about a blitz, since this play has no built in check down and can be vulnerable to pressure up the middle.
Pair this with Four Verticals or PA Corner Post from the same set to keep defenders guessing between deep shots, then come back with Curls or Stick on the next snap to bait the defense into sitting on the pass.
Best used on second or third and long when you need a big chunk play and are willing to take a shot down the field against man coverage.
