HB Dive out of Singleback Y Trips lines up the offensive line in a tight blocking surface with the HB aligned directly behind the QB, attacking the A or B gap immediately at the snap. The diagram shows no route concepts developing since this is a straight downhill run play, with the offensive line combo blocking to seal interior gaps and the HB reading the initial hole before making one cut. This is a pure run play designed to attack light boxes and aggressive linebacker fills, not a man or zone beater since it does not rely on route leverage against coverage.
Defensive Reads
Identify base 4-3 or 4-2-5 fronts with linebackers sitting at normal depth since these are the easiest boxes to attack with HB Dive. Watch for a defensive tackle shaded directly over the center or a 3-technique crashing inside, since this can blow up the dive before the back gets to the line. Man coverage shells with linebackers in press alignment on the TE or slot often leave the box light, making this a favorable run look. Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with linebackers reading run first and filling gaps quickly will shut this play down, especially if the Mike linebacker is sitting at five yards or less. Watch for a nano blitz or overload pressure package where extra defenders crash the interior gaps immediately after the snap, since this eliminates the dive lane before the back can plant his foot.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this against six defenders or fewer in the box to avoid running into a stacked front.
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the offense on schedule without tipping your hand.
Pair HB Dive with HB Power O or HB Counter from the same Y Trips set so the defense cannot key on a single gap or blocking scheme.
If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre-snap, consider hot routing the HB to a stay-in block or motioning to check the true numbers before the snap.
Mix HB Dive with play action shots like PA Zone Shot or PA Draw Shot from this set once you have established the inside run, forcing linebackers to respect the dive fake.
