Breakdown

Empty Y Cross lines up in an empty backfield out of Trey Y-Flex, spreading five eligible receivers across the formation with no blocking help for the QB. The Y runs a deep crossing route from the left slot all the way across the field, sitting behind two vertical clear-out routes from the outside receivers on that side while the backside receiver runs a corner route over the top of the crosser. The lone right side receiver runs a quick out to the flat to give the QB an immediate outlet, with the primary read progression starting on the Y crosser working across the middle before checking down to the flat route if the crosser is taken away.

Defensive Reads

Check the middle linebacker depth and width at the snap, if he sits shallow and spins toward the trips side the crosser will have room to work against zone. Key the deep safety rotation post snap, single high defenders that bite on the vertical routes leave the crosser wide open in the intermediate middle. Watch for a lurking user linebacker sitting in the shallow to intermediate middle zone, this is the primary threat that can jump the Y crosser route and bait a turnover. Respect blitz packages that bring five or six rushers since the empty formation offers no protection, the QB must get through his first read fast or check to the flat route against pressure. Cover 3 with a hard-sitting middle linebacker or a robber safety shuts this concept down by taking away the crossing lane, forcing the offense to live on the flat route instead.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz since there is zero protection help against pressure. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, this concept thrives against single high because the crosser can work into the vacated middle void. If you see man coverage, trust the Y crosser to separate against linebackers and safeties on the rub created by the vertical clear-outs. Hot route the flat defender's man to a shallow drag if you are facing heavy underneath zone drops that could clog the crossing lane. Pair this play with WR Screen or HB Draw earlier in a drive to condition the defense to respect quick game, then hit Empty Y Cross when they bite on run fits or screens.
