PA Deep Over out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex shows play-action from a run fake, with the deep over route breaking from the left slot all the way across the field for the explosive shot play. The backside outside receiver runs a vertical clear-out to hold the deep safety, while the two right side receivers work a shallow drag and a mirrored deep over/dig combo underneath to occupy zone defenders and give the QB a checkdown if the deep over is capped. This is primarily a man beater designed to exploit linebackers and safeties biting on the run fake, with the deep over as the clear first read and the shallow drag/dig combo serving as the secondary progression against zone coverage that sinks under the crosser.
Defensive Reads
Key the deep safety at the snap: if he steps up on the run fake, the deep over is live and should be your first target. Watch linebacker depth pre-snap, since shallow or blitzing linebackers leave a wide throwing lane for the crosser to work through the middle. Identify man coverage by checking if defenders turn and run with receivers immediately off the line, which signals the deep over should win against trailing defenders. Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone shells with a deep middle defender sitting in the hole can undercut the deep over, so be ready to check down to the drag or dig route underneath. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker or safety spying the middle of the field, since a disciplined lurk defender can rob the deep over route and force an interception if you stare it down too long.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs (1st or 2nd and medium) when the defense shows run support cheating up, since the play-action fake needs linebackers and safeties biting to fully open the deep over window.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks like Cover 1 or Cover 3, since the deep over thrives when there is only one deep defender who has to choose between the vertical clear-out and the crosser.
If the defense shows two-high shell, be ready to work the underlying drag and dig combo instead of forcing the deep over into a safety who has help.
Hot route the vertical clear-out receiver into a deep comeback or post if you see aggressive corner press coverage jumping the fade route, giving yourself a built-in sight adjustment.
Sequence this play after calling Inside Zone or HB Draw earlier in the drive so linebackers start flowing hard on run action, then dial up PA Deep Over to hit the crosser in the vacated middle of the field.
