Flood Swap is a three-level flood concept out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex that attacks one side of the field with stacked route depths. To the field side, the outside receiver runs a deep corner up to the sideline while the inside slot receiver swaps underneath with a wheel route out of the backfield area, creating a high-low-swap combo that stresses a single flat defender or deep third corner. On the boundary, the tight end runs a deep dig across the middle while the two receivers to that side run a vertical seam and a shallow drag/out to hold linebackers and clear space. The primary read progression starts with the deep corner route to the flood side, then works down to the wheel underneath, with the backside dig as a late-window answer versus zone drops.
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment to the flood side since soft corner support signals Cover 3 or Cover 4 concepts that this play is designed to exploit. Watch the flat defender post-snap, if he widens to the corner route the wheel route underneath will be open in the vacated space. Zone defenses with a hard-corner squat technique can undercut the corner route, so be ready to reset to the dig route on the backside. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten by the wheel route creating natural leverage against a trailing defender. Watch for a user-controlled lurk defender sitting in the flood side hook zone, since that defender can jump the underdneath wheel route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing single high or two-high safety shell before deciding to attack the flood side. Against Cover 3, the deep corner route stresses the flat defender and deep third corner simultaneously, so read outside-in if the corner sits on the deep route. Against Cover 2, look to the wheel route working underneath since the corner route can get squeezed by the deep half safety. Use this play on second or third and medium situations where you have time to work through the full flood progression. Pair Flood Swap with Levels Out KO or Stick from the same set to keep defenses honest on shorter combination routes before hitting the deep flood shot.
