Read Option is a zone read run play out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex with 11 personnel, showing three receivers stacked to one side and the QB reading the mesh point with the HB on a lateral option path. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sliding to the playside gap while the QB keys the unblocked defensive end to decide between handing off on the inside track or pulling it for the edge. This is a run play at its core, with the read mechanic acting as a built-in RPO-style deception element rather than a pass concept, and the primary read progression is the QB reading the DE first before shifting eyes to the alley defender if he keeps it himself.
Defensive Reads
Diagnose the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders in the box this play becomes tougher to execute against disciplined gap fills. Key the play side defensive end immediately at the snap since he is the primary read for the QB, if he sits and reads instead of crashing he can blow up both options. Watch for a spy linebacker or a defender staying home in the alley, that defender is designed to take away the QB keep option and force the ball inside. Look for defenses that walk down a safety into the box or bring an extra run defender to the edge, that alignment signals they are selling out to stop the zone read keep. Identify if the defense is in man coverage with no extra flow support, since that leaves cutback lanes open against slower pursuing linebackers.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium, when the defense shows base fronts without extra run support.
Check the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment pre-snap, if they are crashing hard on run every snap you can key the keep read faster.
Pair this with RPO Alert Out or RPO Zone Alert Screen from the same set so the defense has to respect both the run action and quick perimeter throws off similar formation looks.
Motion or shift the Trey side receivers pre-snap to force the defense to declare their coverage shell before the snap, giving you a cleaner read on the edge defender.
Save this play for situations where you want to attack a defense that has been sitting in zone coverage on early downs, since the run action punishes light boxes and slow-flowing linebackers.
