Mtn Whip Y-Shake is a man beater out of Shotgun Trey Y-Flex that leans on a whip route from the boundary receiver combined with a Y-Shake option route from the tight end to create instant separation against tight coverage. The whip route breaks back hard toward the sideline to shake off press or trail defenders, while the Y-Shake concept from the tight end reads the underneath defender and settles into whichever void the defense leaves open. Your primary read starts with the whip route on the boundary against man coverage, then progresses to the Y-Shake option if the corner sits low or if you see zone drop from a linebacker taking away the flat.
Man coverage with a corner playing tight press on the boundary receiver is the ideal trigger, the whip route creates instant separation off the double move break Watch for a linebacker sinking into the shallow flat or spy zone, that defender can undercut the whip route if he reads it early so the Y-Shake tight end becomes your outlet Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties sitting deep will bait you into throwing the whip too early, wait for the break instead of leading the throw Nickel or dime packages that show blitz pre snap can leave the Y-Shake option uncovered against zone drops, especially if the defense sends five and only leaves three underneath defenders User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field are the biggest threat, if you see a user flash toward the whip route path abort and check down to the Y-Shake concept immediately
Check the corner's alignment on the boundary receiver before the snap, if he is playing tight press this whip route wins almost every time due to the built in head fake at the top of the stem
Use this play on third and short to third and medium since the whip route only needs a few yards of separation to convert
Hot route your backside receiver into a quick out or slant if you diagnose zone pre snap so you have a second answer besides the whip and Y-Shake combo
Pair this call with Mtn Wheels Slot Choice or Mtn DBL Outs Swirl earlier in a drive so the defense respects other Mtn concepts and cannot key on the whip route tendency
If the user drops a defender into the shallow flat to jump the whip route, reset your eyes to the Y-Shake tight end who should be settling into the vacated zone behind the linebacker level
